1.6L F16D4 Engine

Engine F16D4 is the result of F16D3 engine evolution. This engine is equipped with a variable valve timing system (VVT) and system what changes intake and exhaust channel lengths. Finally, the problem with valves was solved. Exhaust Gas Recirculation system (EGR) was removed also. These are big changes. As a result, we got more powerful and reliable engine.

As the previous version, engine has cast iron cylinder block with steel crankshaft and forged steel conrods, 16 valves and two overhead camshafts aluminum head on top of the block, multi-point electronic fuel injection and ignition, timing belt (not chain). By the way, this engine is almost a copy of A16XER from Opel.
Chevrolet 1.6l F16D4 Engine Problems and Reliability

1. If don't look at timing belt condition, in one day will happened great engine disaster - blended valves, crushed pistons and etc.
2. Thermostat is the weakest point of GM engines, and F16D4 is not an exception.
3. Oil leaks from head cover, like on old F16D3.
4. This engine doesn't have Hydraulic tappets anymore. You have to adjust the valve gaps by yourself every 60,000 miles. But somebody think that's advantage of this motor.
